FAA drone registration system – here is the complete list of drones that need to be registered
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is launching its drone registration system on December 21, 2015. If any drone that weighs more than 0.55 pounds (250 grams) and less than 55 pounds (25 kilograms), will need to be registered under FAA Drone registration system.
There’s a $5 fee to register a drone under FAA drone registration system, but the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will refund the money if anyone who registers in the first 30 days after December 21. For those who already own a drone or will own a drone before December 21, 2015, you must register by February 19, 2016. Anyone who becomes a first-time drone owner after December 21, 2015, must register before their first flight outdoors. Registration is good for three years and $5 fee allows an owner to register multiple drones.
“Make no mistake: unmanned aircraft enthusiasts are aviators, and with that title comes a great deal of responsibility,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a news release. “Registration gives us an opportunity to work with these users to operate their unmanned aircraft safely. I’m excited to welcome these new aviators into the culture of safety and responsibility that defines American innovation.”
If you are flying an unregistered drone that weighs more than 0.55 pounds will be a federal crime subjecting violators to fines of up to $250,000 and/or imprisonment for up to three years. To register your drone, you must provide your name, email address, home address and you must be 13 years or older.
