Xiaomi’s getting into the laptop game with its MacBook Air clone
Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has just unveiled its first ever laptop in the form of the Mi Notebook Air.
Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air
Xiaomi’s latest product, the Mi Notebook Air, isn’t quite as novel as a hoverboard or the company’s latest drone, but it does have one thing most other ultraportable laptops lack — a discrete graphics card (discrete graphics cards are typically faster than their embedded brethren). A Nvidia GeForce 940MX, to be exact.
Xiaomi’s ultra-thin notebook comes in two sizes: 13.3-inch and 12.5-inch. Interestingly, the Mi Notebook is slimmer and lighter than the MacBook.
Unveiled at a press event here in Beijing alongside the dual-camera wielding Redmi Pro phone, the 13.3-inch Mi Notebook Air was designed to fill a niche, Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun said. Similar ultraportables, such as the Razer Blade Stealth, lack discrete graphics and rely on Intel’s integrated graphics to do the legwork, which means their gaming capabilities are limited. Xiaomi says you can play games like Dota 2 at 85 frames-per-second at the full-HD resolution on its Notebook Air.
The Mi Notebook Air is powered by an Intel Core i5-62OOU, at speeds of up to 2.5 GHz, which will allow you to run almost every graphics applications. It includes 8GB of DDR4 RAM and 256GB in an SSD. Mi Notebook Air has a 13.3-inch display at 1,920 X 1,080 pixels of resolution.
The Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air measures 309 X 210.9 X 14.8 mm and weighs 1.28 kg (1.82 pounds). It integrates three USB ports- one for charging, one HDMI and a 3.5 mm audio port. A 40Wh battery will allow you to use it for 9.5 hours. It runs on Microsoft Windows 10 operating system.
Price
If you’re lusting for either one of these laptops, the bad news is that Xiaomi will only officially sell the Mi Notebook Air in China. They go on sale on August 2 and will retail for 4,999 yuan (Approx Rs. 51,000) and 3,499 yuan (Approx Rs. 35,000) respectively.
