Top five announcements from the Digital India dinner:

  • Sundar Pichai-led Google will help bring wireless Internet or WiFi to 500 railway stations across the country “in a short time,” PM Modi said.
  • Microsoft’s Satya Nadella shared the company’s plan to help the government take low cost broadband to five lakh villages.
  • Microsoft will also announce next week the availability of its cloud services operating out of Indian data centers. “We believe low cost broadband connectivity coupled with the scale of cloud computing and the intelligence that can be harnessed from data can help drive creativity, efficiency and productivity across governments and businesses of all size. This is turn will create global opportunities for India,” Mr Nadella said.
  • Qualcomm has promised a 10 billion rupee fund for startups in India. “We share Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy,” Qualcomm executive chairman Paul E Jacobs said.
  • Qualcomm also announced that it will set up a number of ‘design houses’ for product innovation in India.

1-PM Modi Shows Keen Interest in Using Tesla’s Power Ball Technology

PM Modi visited Tesla Motors campus on Sunday and showed keen interest in some of their path breaking inventions, particularly in the renewable energy sector which can have multiple applications in remote rural areas.  PM Modi tweeted how he was impressed by the power ball technology of Tesla Motors which stores electricity in a battery for long term.
“Enjoyed discussion on how battery technology can help farmers,” Modi said after his hour-long visit to Tesla campus wherein he was given a tour by its CEO Elon Musk.

2- PM Modi and Tim Cook talk about developing app ecosystem in India

“The Prime Minister said he would like Apple to start manufacturing in India. He mentioned the huge opportunities India offered,” Ministry of External Affairs Spokesman Vikas Swarup told reporters.

PM Modi said he would like Apple to start manufacturing in India, and Apple CEO Tim Cook responded positively, “I think India does fits into his long term plans. He particularly was interested in the whole App development economy, which he said could be a very very important factor for entrepreneurship where individual app developers can just become part of the app universe,” he said.

3- PM Modi tours Google HQ with CEO Sundar Pichai

Modi said the vision was to connect all schools and colleges with broadband. He announced a plan to expand WiFi coverage across 500 railway stations across India in collaboration with Google.

“In this digital age, we have an opportunity to transform lives of people in ways that was hard to imagine just a couple of decades ago. I see technology as a means to empower and as a tool that bridges the distance between hope and opportunity,” he said.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai said- India will play a big part in driving technology forward in the future.

“PM Modi has accelerated India’s effort to become next global hot bed of innovation and entrepreneurship,” Mr Pichai told a gathering of top Silicon Valley CEOs at a dinner hosted in honour of the Prime Minister.

4- PM Modi tours Microsoft HQ with CEO Satya Nadella

Mr Nadella said next week, Microsoft would announce cloud services from Indian data centres as a key part of both Make in India and Digital India – PM Modi’s pet projects.

Outlining more plans for India, Mr Nadella also announced Microsoft’s plans to take technology to 500,000 villages.

“We believe low cost broadband connectivity coupled with the scale of cloud computing and the intelligence that can be harnessed from data can help drive creativity, efficiency and productivity across governments and businesses of all size,” he said.

At the “Digital India” dinner where Prime Minister Narendra Modi met top CEOs of Silicon Valley, Microsoft’s Satya Nadella shared what he called a “haunting image” from his childhood in Andhra Pradesh to illustrate how digital India can change lives.

5-PM Modi Arrives at Facebook Townhall Q&A with Mark Zuckerberg

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who continues to pitch ‘Digital India’ in Silicon Valley, addressed a Townhall session with CEO Mark Zuckerberg at Facebook Headquarters.

Mark Zuckerberg said  -We’ve received more than 40000 questions for this town hall.
-India is personally very important to the history of our company. Early on before things were going well, we saw Steve Jobs.
