Cat S60 is the world’s first smartphone with a built-in thermal imaging camera
CAT, a company mostly known for manufacturing heavy-duty machinery and engines, will be heading to this year’s Mobile World Congress(MWC) in Barcelona, Spain, to present a new smartphone – Cat S60. The smartphone is not only waterproof and shockproof but also equipped with an onboard thermal imaging camera.
The thermal camera is certainly a feature that stands out immediately. Cat integrates the technology directly into a handset with an onboard camera system made by thermal imaging specialist FLIR Systems.
It allows users to use their devices to monitor events that involve heat. These include work-related chores like detecting heat loss around windows and doors, spotting moisture and missing insulation, or identifying over-heating electrical appliances and circuitry. The camera runs with a comprehensive application offering various functions (still image, panorama, video mode, etc.).
The CAT S60 is an extremely rugged device. This smartphone can survive a nearly 1.8 meters (~5.9 feet) drop onto concrete with its Strengthened Die-Cast frame. The company also called it the “most waterproof smartphone” and can survive in water as deep as 5 meters (~16.4 feet) for an hour.
The Cat S60 is a 4G Android 6.0 Marshmallow smartphone with a 4.7-inch HD display with Gorilla Glass 4 glass. It uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 octa-core processor with a 32GB internal memory and 3GB of RAM. The Cat S60 is packed by 3,800 mAh battery.
On the back of the Cat S60 smartphone, there are two different camera modules: one is a standard 13-megapixel camera with dual flash that shoots ordinary photos, and the other is a special FLIR-made thermal camera that provides a heat view of the world around you. There is a 5-Megapixel front-facing camera for the selfie.
